I grew up in Middle-Atlantic region of the US where the East Coast begins to give way to the Mid-West, and the landscape is the rolling green hills of Appalachia. I've lived and worked in Pittsburgh, the DC-Baltimore area, the San Francisco Bay area and the Portland, OR area. I've had an interest in geeky things since I was young. I'm a fan of comic books, D&D and Magic the Gathering. I play MTG online.
I also enjoy camping, backpacking, bicycling, hiking and cross-country skiing. I don't seem to find much time for that these days though.
I've got an interest in politics. I'm concerned about the deterioration of liberal institutions world-wide and especially in the US. Not the least of these institutions is the press. To do my part, I will often post links to liberal blogs, the alternative press, the foreign press and other sources pointing out things that the mainstream press might have missed and the right-wing propaganda/noise machine may have fabricated and/or distorted.
I grew up Catholic. After an adolescence and young adulthood of trying to make religion work while maintaining intellectual honesty, I realized that I did not believe in God. I had to admit that I was an atheist. I've come to embrace that. I have, however, come to the realization that there is a metaphorical level to various mythologies and that they seem to be universal and touch people. I have no compunction about drawing parallels between religions and showing how they are trying to accomplish the same thing even though believers may not recognize this. I therefore now identify as a heretic.
I followed the punk rock scene from the early eighties. There was a period of about ten years that I rarely missed a Ramones show in the town that I was in. I spent some time in '91 hitchhiking and backpacking around Europe. I spent some time with German squatters that year.
I've worked with a variety of science and engineering companies as well as some other types of companies mostly as a database software developer.
I have a formal science/technology education. I am a self-taught student of comparative religion, mysticism, politics, bullshit detection, rationality and ethics.
I live with my wife, flotsomnjetsom, and our son in the Portland, OR area. I love them both very much.
