Vermont Goes to Single-Payer Health Care

We know it works because it works in several other countries, and other systems for universal, government-controlled health care have been producing great results for decades. Study after study shows that single-payer would mean better, cheaper health care in the US, with almost no legitimate academic work showing the contrary.

Romney made the case that [his healthcare law] fostered personal responsibility and called the law practical and "market-based." Republicans in Washington had made this same point a decade earlier, when they built one of their main alternatives to Bill Clinton's reform plan around an individual mandate

The only effective way to reduce government debt is by addressing the three main causes of present and future deficits: tax breaks for the wealthy, excessive military spending, and exploding health care costs. Those fixes are unpopular with the Right, but they're supported by strong majorities among the American people.

Islamabad, Pakistan - Pakistan has demanded that the United States steeply reduce the number of Central Intelligence Agency operatives and Special Operations forces working in Pakistan, and that it put on hold C.I.A. drone strikes aimed at militants in northwest Pakistan, a sign of the near collapse of cooperation between the two testy allies.

It's a bit odd. They're claiming nothing new has gone wrong, yet they're raising the severity rating from a level 5 to the highest level that exists, a 7.

That dashing young man up there handing Smith the gavel is the retiring RNC chair, George H.W. Bush. He would later be president. He had already fathered the engineer of our national demise. Later in her career, Smith would campaign for the elder Bush. David Broder would call her one of H.W.'s "biggest supporters."

But this is about Mary Louise Smith of Iowa, the first woman to chair the RNC. See, the funny thing is that she was a pro-choice, pro-Equal Rights Amendment member of Planned Parenthood at the time she was given that gavel. In fact, "Smith served on the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of Mid-Iowa from 1986 through 1992, and in 1989 she also became a member of Planned Parenthood Federation of America's National Leadership Committee."
